Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

divorce/annulment after 7 wks of marriage

My spouse ''lost it'' last weekend, again; a different incident a few weeks earlier had cause red flags to go up for me. I want a divorce or annulment. He has proved to be mentally unstable, perhaps bi-polar or schizophrenic. I have witnesses and cell phone messages that reflect this.

He is engaging a lawyer to force me to work on the marriage. I want to file for divorce. He has agreed at times during the last week to a ''no fault'' divorce, but now I do not believe he will cooperate. From what I have read I can get a divorce without his consent. What will I be up against? Do I have grounds for annulment? I have no money to engage a lawyer. Is there a women's advocacy group that will assist me?

First, I think he is bluffing. I don't know of any lawyers that can make you "work" on your marriage.

Houston Volunteer Lawyers or Lone Star Legal are two free legal services in town.

I don't know if you have grounds for annulment. The grounds in Texas are limited.

In Texas, you cannot be required to stay married if you don't want to. If you agree to go to marriage counseling, then the court will allow the case to stay on "hold" for awhile. Eventually, the court will dismiss the divorce if the parties don't move forward.

Good luck!

If you want a price quote, call me. I do a free phone consultation for folks on Harris or Ft. Bend County.
