What is a "docket call" in a child custody suit?

It means the court will call the the case to see if the parties are ready for a final trial (if one has been scheduled). At docket call, the judge calls the case and asks the parties how much of the court's time they will need for trial. Based on that and the court's workload, the Judge will tell you to come back at a later time, maybe a later date, and have your trial. The judge will also encourage you to work out a settlement. Once it goes to trial, you've put your fate into the hands of a stranger.
