Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
I am engaged to a man who controls all of our finances. We have a joint banking account but he's told me that he will leave me if I don't continue to let him control all the money. I am not supposed to use our debit card, and he gives me a credit card to use -- to accumulate airline miles.
I have been stupid to be so controlled. I am currently trying to figure out a way to leave him. My question is whether a credit card in my name (although HE is the card holder) can be used freely by me.
He has threatened that he will sue me if I make a large purchase if he doesn't approve it first. I want to put down a deposit for an apartment before he cuts off my card. Can he sue me for that when the card is in MY name - even though he is the PRIMARY on the card?
1 Answer from Attorneys
1. Don't believe his threats. He's a bully, and a liar. Don't make any more decisions based on fear.
2. Use whatever credit cards you need to to get away from this man. Anyone who threatens you is not your friend.
3. Don't worry about being sued.
