can my ex-husband back out of his contract which states that for the school year when the kids come to live with him and his new wife for the first time, he will continue child support to me in order to support the transition by helping me be able to fly to visit the children monthly...

I don't know what you mean by contract? If there are outstanding court orders (and I presume there are), your side contracts do not abate the enforceable court orders.

If you are changing custody, support is usually affected. These arrangements are rarely successful, without going through the court. The only enforceable document is the most recent court order.
