Once a divorce/custody battle has escaladed to the top judge (instead of the associate judge). Is it possible to go back to the associate judges court?

Not likely, unless the sitting district judge is hearing the case based upon an appeal from the associate judge. By dismissing the appeal, theoretically it could back to the associate judge. However, a contested final trial is still heard by the district judge.
