How you will need to proceed depends on a few factors: how old is the child, has the child had any sort of relationship with the father, is there any child support that is owed to you from father, and are you remarried? If you are, is a step-parent adoption a good option in your case? If it is, it may help in the court ultimately granting a termination.

The first thing that you need to do is to talk to an attorney who does termination/adoption cases. Terminations are rather technical and it can be heartbreaking to have an adoption overturned because all of the steps were not properly taken. Some courts will not even allow someone to terminate under certain circumstances. This is definitely something that you do not want to try without an attorney.
