Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
Fatherhood
About 6 years ago I had a relationship with a woman at work. The relationship lasted about a year. When the relationship ended she told me she was going back to her ex husband and also that she was pregnant. She told me she had been seeing someone else when she was with me and she was sure it was his baby but her ex would accept her back. Months later I hear that her ex and her did not work out and she married the man that got her pregnant. I have had no contact with her in 6 years as she is married and took his name and it was his child. I heard a rumor she thinks the kid is mine, do I have any obligations? What do I need to know or do? The child is approximately 6 years old now. Thanks very much for your help.

Re: Fatherhood
This is one of those questions that is hard to respond to in an email. Emails don't give any clues as to motivation. There is no indication that your former lover is planning on coming after you for support, but if she does file a paternity suit against you and the DNA testing shows you are the father, then you will be obligated to support your child. If you really think the child is yours and want to claim him or her and are willing to disrupt three other peoples lives, then you can file a paternity suit and proceed with the DNA testing and then child support and custody if you are the father.
