There is no flat fee. There are some of the work & expenses involves. first there is a finger print card (under $25 at the police station in Houston, TX). There is a filing fee. Each judge does it somewhat different. In Harris County the filing fee is around $300. There there are the finger print cards. Some judges make you do a background check through Austin, TX (now includes FBI background check) that runs under $100. Can take up to 4-6 months. Most people use an attorney. I used to do them but they are such a pain that I've stopped doing them. I used to charge a flat $500 plus expenses but most people called me so many times that I found that I lost money. I think $1,000 for a lawyer would be reasonable for all the behind the scenes work I had to do with the judges in Harris County family courts.

Did your mother legally change your name? If not, you can just go back to your birth name.
