Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Hi,

Just some general questions. I reside in Texas. I am legally married right now, but have been separated now for almost 4 years. We have been living apart for 3 years and have decided that is time to start the proceedings for a divorce. We never filed a legal seperation, and she and I have already agreed to what we both want. We have avoided up until now cause of the price of a lawyer, but we were hoping to handle on our own. We wan't joint custody of the children and we do have a home that I am not contesting and leaving to my wife and the kids. Is this a situation where we could handle the paperwork on our own? I have found the legal documents online, and looks like I could handle??? Please help...don't really have the time to even sit down with a lawyer to ask a price from him, so for that matter we don't even know what we would even be paying a lawyer. Thank you for your time.

You will be much, much better off if you hire a lawyer. Shop around. Send emails (all lawyers have websites nowadays). Get some quotes.

You want to make sure that you end up with a bulletproof divorce decree. You wouldn't do your own tumor surgery; you'd let a doctor do it. Hire a lawyer. Find an inexpensive one.
