Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Guardianship

I have a friend who is stuck in a custody battle right now. He is 16 years old and his parents recently got divorced. His dad lives in Taiwan and his mom lives in Texas, USA. His dad has no chance of coming over to the United States to fight for his custody because he has a company to run and a father with cancer to care for. His mom wants sole custody of him because she just wants more money. My friend doesn't like his mom but doesn't want to have to go to Taiwan either. I was wondering if there was anyway that his aunt, who also lives in Texas, could become his legal guardian so that he can stay where he is living now.

Re: Guardianship

Your friend's aunt could apply for legal custody as a choice of the 16 year old. The aunt could receive child support from both parents until he becomes 18 or graduates from high school.
