Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Hi,

How much would it cost for a name change. I would probably just change one name to another or simply add one name to my own-I don't know if that affects the cost or not. Also, how quickly can it be done? And if need be, if I wanted it done quickly, could I just pay more for that or what? What type of attorney/law would that be done under?

Thanks

Assuming that you are an adult: the court cost is generally about $250.00 depending on the county in which you live. The other cost would be attorney fess, which depend on the attorney you hire. The name you would like does not affect the cost at all. The time involved will depend again on the county in which you live (in other words, the court rules regarding obtaining a hearing date). Generally it can be done within a couple of weeks or as little as a few days. Obviously, if a lawyer has to rearrange his schedule to go to court with you immediately, there may be higher attorney fees. There are some restrictions and the court does not have to order the change. If you need further information, contact me directly.

Yes, David is correct, although some of the time will also be up to the client in that - with a name change - there are normally criminal checks and fingerprints that need to get done, too. The court wants assurance that the name change isn't to avoid a criminal penalty or avoid debts.
