Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
Hi,
I plan to file for divorce. My husband moved out about a week ago and took all of the money from our joint bank account. I haven't worked in years and now I need a lawyer, but don't think I can afford one. He has been abusive. What do you suggest as far as getting legal representation? Someone said maybe I could get my case taken on a contigency fee basis as there would be a substantial amount of money involved. However, I've only heard of cases taken on contingency fees when there is a personal injury involved. Thanks for your replies.

Lawyers won't take a divorce case on a contingency basis. There's a question whether that would even be ethical.
You might be able to find a lawyer who will ask the Court for interim attorney's fees (to be paid to YOUR lawyer by the husband). However, often lawyers who ask the Court to do this are told "no."
Your other option is Legal Aid. You might contact these folks:

You might find that their standards of "needy" are very high - they are always overbooked.
