Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

my husband wants to adopt my son so he can have his last name because his bio dad is out of my sons life. my question is can we do all this process without having to pay for a lawyer?

You can try. You need to to a termination of parental rights & a step-parent adoption - 2 lawsuits. Most "beginning" lawyers can't do them.

I think on my blog a couple of years ago I wrote about what it takes to do this 2 step process. It is complex and takes probably at least 6 months. There is an attorney appointed to represent the child's interest. There is a social study done. There is a background check on the "adopting parent". This is no easy task! If the bio. dad objects, it could be done but it really becomes a huge mountain to climb!
