This is a dilemma that is very common. Mediation can cost $1000 per side.

Did the judge appoint someone specific to do the mediation? If not, you may be able to have a low-cost mediator do it (in Dallas, we use SMU Mediation or DMS).

In the alternative, you can file a motion to ask the Judge to reconsider the mediation order and, in the meantime, do some INFORMAL mediation, that is, sit down and try to settle it without a mediator. That way, you can tell the Judge "Hey, we tried our best, and we don't think we can settle it; please set us for trial."
