Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Keeping down costs

Is it possible for myself and my husband to come to one lawyer together? We have basically agreed as to how to divide everything and child support, we are just trying to save cost on both sides and use one lawyer that can potentially act as a mediator to work out the few straggling items we may not have thought of or don't know what to do with them.

Re: Keeping down costs

An attorney can normally only represent one side in a lawsuit and divorces are lawsuits. Collaborative law does allow you to use one attorney but tends to be very expensive and probably isn't what you are really looking for or need. A lot depends on what you consider straggling items and how much they are worth versus the cost of deciding who gets them.

What you can do is decide which one of you is going to hire an attorney. Let that attorney handle preparing all the paperwork and then, if need be, let the other party just hire an attorney to review the final documents. Be sure to use experienced family law attorneys.
