Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

leaving home and droppping out

I am 17 and live with a drug abusing mother. She often yells and hits/throws things at me. She does not take me to school or do anything for me. She drags me around to different drug deals and yells when I dont want to go. We have no place to live so we live in a trashy hotel on a really bad side of town. Sometimes we stay with one of her boyfriends. But wherever we are she sometimes doesnt even come back at night..and she doesnt call. My first question is..Tommorow night one of my friends are coming to get me because their parents want me out of the situation I am in. I am leaving withou my mothers consent, but I was told at 17 all the police can do is make me call her and let her know where I am and that I am ok. Is this correct? Because she is neglecting me. Second question..She has not taken me to school in 3 weeks but wont sign the papers for me to drop and get my GED..When I leave tommorow im also leaving school, but I havent been there in a long time anyway. Can I get in trouble? I can prove that I wasnt being taken to school before I ever left her care. They cant do anything to me right? Im just looking out for my future and doing whats best for me.
