Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

What are the legal rights of a 17 year old in Texas? His father passed away, and his mother lost custody of him years ago. He wants to live with family friends who are willing to take him in. But the High school he attends says they cannot legally give this family any information regarding this student, that it has to be a family member of the student, such as an uncle.

A 17 year old is a minor for civil purposes.

Someone needs legal custody of him.

The bottom line is that a judge needs to appoint a conservator over him. It does not necessarily have to be a relative but it usually is. You need to talk to an experienced family law attorney. His mother will have to receive notice of this lawsuit.

I suggest that you look on this website and on www.avvo.com for an attorney.

I think you are in Houston area. Therefore, I recommend Patricia Bushman, JD at 713-807-9405. Her rates are good & she takes payment plans. She raised several children that no one else wanted so she is pretty creative about custody & high schools. Tell her office that FRAN sent you. I rent space in her office.

Good luck!
