is there a legal separation available in texas for tax purposes?

Texas does not actually have a legal separation status at all, but if you'll look at the IRS website (or consult a CPA, of course), I believe that there's some information there regarding a change in what they consider your marital status to be if you've maintained separate households for at least the last six months of the tax year without the intent to reunite.
