How to legalize a parenting relationship for a family member?

I have a niece whose doesn't want to parent. She

has a 12-year old daughter for whom I care. I would

like to legalize our relationship. What should I

do?

Depends on what you want to do. Do you wish to adopt the child? This would mean that in the eyes of the law, you would be the child's parent just as though the child were born to you, and your niece would have no more rights with respect to the child than a stranger. If you wish instead to be appointed the child's guardian, then you would have authority and responsibility for the child, but the niece would remain the child's mother. Either way, you should consult an attorney.

To add to Mr. Verner, I think you could also obtain custody through a Suit Affecting the Parent Child Relationship. A lawyer is essential for this process.
