If a spouse is the beneficiary of a life insurance policy from her recently deceased brother, is this considered an ''inheritance'' which would be separate property?

Generally speaking, yes it would be separate property.

I would strongly urge you to consult a probate or estate planning attorney immediately regarding your rights.

If you deposit the money into a joint account, you would be co-mingling the money.

You will need to talk to someone about interest, dividends, etc. These can be considered community property. Again you don't want to co-mingle money.
