Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

I live in texas and was divorced about 2 years ago but did not change my last name then. I now have reasons to change my name for my safety. I do not wish to have my maiden name either as my last name. My biological father walked out on us when I was 3 yrs old and has never been in my life. Can I choose any last name to use, as long as it belongs to one of my ancestors or even my stepfather?

You aren't limited by ancestors or stepfather or anybody else. Pick a name. I always thought "Zadfrack" was a nice last name.

File a petition to change your name. It involves you being fingerprinted, and obtaining a copy of your criminal record (even if the record is "nothing there").
