Certainly the first, best step is to start sending child support. He probably doesn't need a lawyer yet, he needs to establish himself as a stable, dependable dad. Employed and paying support and exercising visitation.
You did not say why he was in jail, but regardless, it is an issue that is not a simple matter to overcome. Once he has shown a track history, and has saved some money, then he needs to hire a lawyer, work out a payment plan, and review his situation.

Certainly paying something is better than nothing, but if he doesn't start paying the full court ordered support he may very well find himself back in jail for contempt of court. Since he probably doesn't really know or understand what happened at Court, he really needs to talk to a good family law attorney who can at least review the situation and make sure he understands his rights and obligations. Perhaps his family can help? Good Luck!
