Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
Could I be made to support her for the rest of her life?
I am divorcing my wife of 16 years. We have not lived under the same room together in 3 years. She has gotten an attorney and wants me to "take care of her financally" for the rest of her life. Is that possible? I've given her well over half of all of our furniture, etc. I think this is unreasonable. She is quiet capable of working.

I echo the other replies and also stress that you should obtain an atty.
Due to the length of your marriage, alimony is possible for up to three years.
Hire an atty.

I agree with what Pfister said. However, in my view, unless you had beaten her and caused serious long term injuries, kept her from working or you did some other odious thing, I think that you are pretty safe in concluding that she is blowing smoke. Hire a good lawyer and let them sort it out. If you are in Williamson, Blanco Travis, Bastrop, Hays, Caldwell, Comal or Bexar county please contact us..
Re: Could I be made to support her for the rest of her life?
It is a rare case where one spouse is required to support the other spouse after divorce, let alone for the life of the spouse. However, every case is different. If your wife has an attorney, you should hire one as well. Proceed carefully.

I also believe that she is being unreasonable based on the facts as presented. However, be advised that Texas does have a limited alimony law that you must be aware of. It would appear that her desire of "support for the rest of her life" should be filed under the catagory of "wishful thinking".
