Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

I was married a LOONG time ago and within 3 weeks of being married I left because I feared for my safety- it turned out that my new husband was a drug addict. Now I am wanting to get married again but I do not know if that marriage is still legal since we did not go before a judge or a justice of the peace. We were married in a church and I do not have any info on my former husband. My uncle is in the city were I was "married' and looking into if that man is still alive and looking for a marriage certificate, but so far all he has found is that the certificate says I was married through the church but nothing else. He is supposed to send me a copy of the certificate. If it says only through the church, am I still married?

Since it sounds like you were married in a ceremony, I would file a divorce. Then there will be no problems in the future.
