Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Im getting married this year to a man that has 2 kids he is current on child support now. How will this affect me and my property? Also after we get married if he God forbids but gets sick and dies who is then liabal for his child support back and current? I just want to make sure I dont get the raw end of this deal. Will a prenup keep me clear of any of his child support stuff? Can prenup say I will not be liable for any past debt?

You are a wise woman to be concerned.

You need to make sure that he has a will. Please talk to an attorney that handles wills and probate.

You should also talk to an attorney that handles family law. He might be current in his child support NOW but if he ever falls behind it could definately impact any property that you might purchase together in the future.

What would I do?

Here are just a few things that come to mind...

You probably don't want to keep all of your finances separate.

So no joint bank accounts.

File your taxes separate.

A prenup would be nice.

Review your wills every 5 years.

Review your finances every 5 years.

Put assets in your name only.

Run your credit annually.

You might want to just together and not marry.

You are very wise to think about this now before walking down the isle.
