Need to know if im married or not

I was married for @23 yrs, or so i thought? we split up 3.5 yrs back.We have 3 children, two of them are adults.My ex is involved with a pakistani man that was recently picked up by the FBI. She as well was picked up.She now tells me that our marriage was not legal and we can just walk away.She has retained an attorney, that called me to tell me the same thing.We were married in a catholic church. I this a legal marriage ? We have no assets at all, we lost everything after we split up. help please.!

Are you sure the person who said you weren't married is a licensed attorney?

If either party was legally married to a third party prior to your marriage and the first marriage was NEVER terminated (death of that spouse or divorce), then the second marriage is probably not any good. There are rules for the "putative spouse" in these situations, but it seems there is no property over which to fight. The correct action might be a divorce, but if there is some real reason for there not to be a valid marriage, then it is a suit affecting the parent child relationship to decide custody, visitation and support and to keep one spouse from taking the children away from the other....
