Mortage

my wifes ex-husband got custody of the kids and kept their house. Her name is still on the mortage. Can he leave it on there or does law require him to take it off.

He probably can't take her name off. The mortgage loan was made to both of them. Just because they got a divorce does not mean the mortgage company has any duty to change the terms it loaned the money under. Hope she got a Deed of Trust to Secure Assumption to protect her interests if he defaults.
