Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
My mother-in-law and her boyfriend of 4 years split up because of his domestic abuse against her. I believe they are considered common law marriage here in Texas. He hadn't paid his taxes in over 10 years and called her and told her that he was going to sue her for his back taxes from 1996-present. My question is can he actually do that or is the debt entirely his own? He also falsified theft accusations against her stating that she stole his furniture and TV, which is a lie because I was there when we moved all her clothes out of the house, nothing else.

I would be glad to meet with our mother in law and talk to her about her problems. I charge $2 per minute to do so. You have not given me enough information to answer your questions.
Common law marriage in Texas is very specific. You can check out the laws of the State of Texas on line for free. The Family Code is on-line.
I highly recommend that you consult with a family law attorney and possibly a CPA.
Good luck!
