you legally move from parents at age 17? i have found conflicting cancells each other out so called laws. i am inquireing on a friends behalf. if she were to move in with someone more than 3 years older, can that person have complaints or suite filed on them? go to jail etc...????? i need to know to the exact effect. the county is parker. town is azle tx. please respond asap.... thank you for your time. --name removed--...

The reason you have found conflicting information is because it is not a clear area of the law.

At 17 a child is not truant and is not a runaway.

At 17 they are still a minor and cannot enter into any legally binding contracts.

If there is child custody or support order, then the child may be forced to return to the custodial parent until graduating high school or turning 18, whichever happens last. Further if the person assisting the 17 has actual notice, then that person can be civilly charged with interfering with a court order, and possbily contempt.

Once a child turns 17, and enters a consenting relationship, the other party cannot be criminally charged with a sexual assault due to age.

Your friend wants to engage in adult behavior, and should consult with an attorney, just as an adult would.
