Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Navy father who does not cooperate

We have a grand daughter living with us, the father is in the navy stationed in Japan but coming to San Deigo, Ca this summer, he does not want his daughter, he also does not cooperate in handling insurance for the child, her DEER credentials are about to expire, we have emailed her father but get no reply. What can we do to get this done, we can not afford insurance on her. His monthly allowance also should be reviewed and upped somewhat. He is now paying 300 per mth. this hardly pays her school lunch and spending money. the girl is an honor roll student and plans on college, her father will not commit to helping her. the child will be 17 in Oct. Please let us hear from you!

Re: Navy father who does not cooperate

Fran is correct. I will give you an answer that comes from being a military brat. I was one of them much longer than I have been a lawyer. Find out who his commanding officer is and start calling. I suggest polite persistant pleading and refusing to give up. Commanding officers like these calls almost as much as a visit to the dentist for root canal surgery but - the navy works it out. Insist on speaking directly to the CO. The CO will speak directly to the dad - your problem will be solved. If you have lots of problems go up a level. My dad was a Marine and Generals can ALWAYS solve these problems. Admirals do too if you have difficulty at the CO level. Good luck. Polite but persistant is the key.

I assume that you have custody of your grand-daughter.

You need to ask for a modification and ask for more money.

Please be advised that after she graduates from high school, the State of Texas does not require a parent to support their child. In other words, college will be her problem.

Best of luck!
