newborn child custody

My ex girlfriend is 20 weeks pregnant. We had been together on and off for about a year. Shes moved out of my apartment with her 4 year old about four times and either goes to her mothers house, a family member or back with her daughters father. The father has on several occasions threaten to end his life and was asked to resign from his job as a jailer because they feared he might endanger himself, my ex, or me. He has caused about two confrontations with me that were not reported but were made aware of to the police. I am a police officer and did so to protect my job but no written report was made. She is now recoinciling once again the her daughters father and I feel that due to his fueding with me n threats to end his life my unborn child should be in my custody. What can I do?
