Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Parent Problems

I recently got into a huge arguement with my dad. I have been scared of him for a really long time but was never able o stand up to him. I finally got the nerve to, and now he is threatning me. He told me if I don't come to his house he will have my mom thrown in jail. I don't knowwhat to do but I'm so scared. If you could please help me I would appreciate it. By the way I'm 15 years of age.

Re: Parent Problems

First, as a divorced mother of a teen-ager I sympathize with you.

I strongly believe that it is a child's right to be the child -- and not be forced into adult situations.

I urge you to take a deep breath and try to think calmly and clearly.

You need to talk to an adult that you trust about what is going on. I highly recommend a school counselor, your minister, your doctor or a trusted relative, etc.

It sounds like (you did not say it in your question) that your parents are divorced. If so, there is a Final Decree of Divorce (or whatever is the last legal document that a judge signed) that controls your visitaiton with your father.

If so, your father cannot have your mother thrown into jail without a judge's order. He would have to go to court and file a contempt motion against her. It should make you feel better that judges don't want to throw people in jail -- it is usually done as a last resort.

If possible, talk to your mother about this problem. You need an adult to guide you during this difficult period.

Good luck!
