Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

My parents are separated but still married.My dad can't work any more and he is going to get a check in from social security.Can my mom take half of that?

How would she "take" half of the check? It's made out to him, and him alone. He goes to the bank and cashes it, and the bank won't ask him if he's married.
