Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Paternity, Child Support

I had an affair with a married woman 8 years ago, and she had a child from the affair. I did not hear from her in 8 years but recently she called me requesting a paternity test. I consented to the test and it revealed that the child is mine. She has divorced her husband and is now requesting child support. Will I be responsible for back child support even though she does not have my name on the birth cerificate and disappeared shortly after conception? I took the paternity test two months ago and I have just recieved a letter to report to set conditions for child support. I'd like to know what to expect or if I need a lawyer.

Re: Paternity, Child Support

The court has discretion concerning how far back it sets retroactive child support. Defending a claim for 8 years of support payments requires expertise. I suggest you contact an attorney for assistance.

Re: Paternity, Child Support

Definitely a good idea to get an attorney, there is no guarantee how far back the court will grant child support, and having an attorney should help you in that regard.
