Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Paying for college

My daughter turns 18 in a couple of months and graduates from high school in June. She would like to go to college but child support stops when she graduates high school. Is there any way I can get a modification to make her dad pay child support after the age of 18 or for her college if he refuses? I can't afford to pay for it myself

Not unless she suffers from a disability or he agrees to it.

To follow up with the first attorney, the State of Texas cannot order child support once the child graduates from high school and/or turns 18.

The only exception is if the child is permanently unable to take care of himself/herself. Then child support can be ordered for the rest of the child's life -- if it is done timely.

I strongly urge you to contact your child's school counselor and learn what is available for her college expenses. For example, my daughter was able to finance 100% of her first year of college with scholarships.

You need to fill out a federal scholarship form that can be done over the internet. Every college your child applies to will receive a copy of this federal scholarship information. It will take into account your income. Her father's income won't be counted since he is not legally obligated to support her.

There is scholarship help out there for low income families. It takes time and determination but my daughter found it.

Be careful with companies that contact you. I went to several meetings and most were scams -- all sorts of promises and all they get you are loans -- you certainly don't need to pay any money to get loans. I get loan applications in my mailbox on a daily basis!

There are several excellent websites for children needing money for scholarships. The school counselor can give them to you.

There are also some wonderful books at any major bookstore. They will also refer you to the legitimate websites.

I hired someone to help me with all the paperwork in Houston. Her name is Sandra Newton. She was worth every penny!

Tell her that I sent you!

My daughter applied to 6 colleges and she chose the one that offered the best scholarship package. The differences in the scholarship packages were huge so don't settle on the first one!

Good luck!

It's hard work but your child can do it!
