Pet Custody

Is there such a thing as getting custody of pets, and if so what would one need to get started?

I'm sure you love your pet, but in the law, the pet is property. Thus, any contest for possession would be considered in the division of property in the dissolution of the marriage - if that is the context of your inquiry.
