Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Petition for adoption/dependancy?

I'm currently enlisted in the army and after leaving for the army 3 years ago my little sister started getting into trouble. She listens to me and I would like to attempt to have the court award me legal ''custody'' or voluntary dependancy. My mother has agreed and will eagerly sign over whatever needs to be signed. My problem is I don't know where to start. I am stationed in Washington state and sister/mother are in Texas. I am completely lost. Any advice?

Re: Petition for adoption/dependancy?

How old is your sister? Is she still under age 18?

Why is your mother so eager to help? Does she understand that in order to "give up her rights" she has to be found an unfit parent and that she will also have to pay child support for your sister?

Because you are on active duty, how are you going to be available from a thousand miles away to care for your sister? How is that going to happen?

You need to talk to counsel in Texas, in the county/city where your mother and sister are living.

Frankly, I think your mother is opening up a can of worms she does not really want to open.

There is counseling available to your sister through her school or through perhaps your mother's health insurance. Seems that would be a good way to start to get some help.

But involving the state could land your sister in foster care.

Hope this helps - even if it doesn't seem to. Elizabeth Powell
