how long is a letter of power of attorney over a child (which has been signed and notarized) good for

Generally a poa is good until it is revoked.

However, it would depend on how you are trying to use it.

A power of attorney ends when the person dies. So if you want custody, a poa is NOT enough.

Also, some schools and doctors won't accept them since they can be revoked at any time. If a person won't accept it, you cannot force them to accept the document.

If you want legal custody, you need to go to court.

A poa is ok for some limited purposes but I would not rely on it to solve all problems and avoid hiring an attorney.
