Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Pro Se Custody Hearing

Hi. I am the custodial mother and my ex doesn't want to pay child support, so he told the judge that he wants custody. Neither of us can afford a lawyer and it is too late now because all pleadings were due today 1/9 at the pretrial. He did not enter any pleadings with any cause to change the custody situation. I have 2 witnesses, my husband and my pastor. What kind of questions should I be asking them? Can I direct questions to my ex and his witnesses. Do I need an opening statement and closing arguments?

Re: Pro Se Custody Hearing

No one here can teach you how to try a custody case. Know that the judge is interested in knowing what is in the child's best interest. The judge wants to know about the child's living arrangements, activities, parental involvement, financial support, income, and the list goes on and on.

If you have a way to hire a lawyer for this hearing, it may prove to be financially advantageous, at least in the long run.
