Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

what is the process in getting a divorce without a lawyer

Hello,

I was wondering if someone could help me with a divorce question? what is the process in getting a divorce without a lawyer? In this case, there are no assets to be split, and no children. The marriage took place in the Philipines. The wife is here in Texas, and the husband is in the Philipines. Also, the two involved seperated 7 days after the marriage and the wife moved to Texas. Again, there are no assets to be split and no children. What does she need to do in order to get a divorce without a lawyer?

Thank you in advance

Information on divorce without an attorney:

1. Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program at 713-228-0732. Free legal service for Harris County residents that qualify.

2. Gulf Coast Legal - free legal services to those that qualify. I don't have their phone number.

3. There are 3 law schools in town - South Texas College of Law, Texas Southern University and University of Houston. All 3 have legal clinics for law school students. Please call and see if you qualify.

4. You can go to any law library. There is the Harris County Law Library downtown in the Jury Assembly Bldg. at the corner of Congress and Fannin. Bring money to use their copier.

5. You can go to the basement of the Family Law Center at 1115 Congress and Houston Volunteer Lawyers have someone to answer questions from 9-noon Monday-Friday.

There was a booklet published by the Texas Young Lawyers Association in 2002-03 called PRO SE DIVORCE HANDBOOK. The courts might be out of them. They were free. I don't know how to find additional copies. Try www.tyla.org and see if it's available online.

6. I do NOT recommend the internet legal services. If seen several forms that were "guaranteed" to work in Texas. THEY DO NOT MEET THE TEXAS REQUIRMENTS TO FINALIZE A DIVORCE IN TEXAS. BEWARE -- MOST ARE EXPENSIVE AND ARE INCOMPLETE!!

7. I offer a Do It Yourself divorce kit for under $200 for Harris County. Other counties are more since I have to modify my forms to work in other counties.

Good luck!
