Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
I am recently divorced, I was not able to afford a attorney to represent me. We did not have any assets, properties, etc.. There was not anything to contest. We do have 2 children that wanted to live with him so they would not have to change schools. Because of this I am ordered to pay 500.00/month child support. We were together for 16 years, married 9. My question is, Am I entitled to any of his 401k and also a pending settlement he is about to receive? I really would like to have my children with me but I myself coming from a broken home did not want to put them through a difficult transformation. Was there anyway around child support? We both provide for the children, we just lost interest in each other. Advice needed!
Thanks,

You have paid a very high price for not hiring a lawyer. That 401k and settlement are property. The 401k, if accumulated during the marriage was community property. The settlement might be community property. Is the divorce final? Is it within 30 days? It may be too late to do anything about it, but maybe not. You will need to retain an attorney to review your documents to see if you have any options left.
