Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
Release of Parental Obligation
I am a single parent with full costody of only 2-year old son, living in San Antonio, Tx. Ex-spouse lives in Alpine, Tx. He would rather give up full parental rights so that he would not be obligated to pay his child support. He has a B.S. and Masters degree in Criminal Justice but has not found any occupation to fulfill his "potential" annual income. Is it possible for him to give up his parental rights so as not to pay his child support? (He is very behind in his support as it is.) Any response to this is greatly appreciated.

Re: Release of Parental Obligation
He would most likely need your approval
to terminate his rights. Courts do not
usually let them off for this reason,
and in fact sometimes the courts will
not let them off even when the custodial
spouse also wants the person terminated.
