what rights do I have if a my ex files custody in CA while my daughter resides in TX with me?

Generally, the law is: Wherever the child has lived for the past six months, that is the "home state" for any custody fights.
If Dad files in California even though the child has lived in Texas for the past six months, you'd file a plea to the jurisdiction (in the California court) - you'd hire a California lawyer to do this.
