after being served with papers can you show up with no attorney and be given time to sort out what to do?

Approx. 20 days after being served with legal papers, you need to file a legal document with the court, called an ANSWER. It does not cost anything. You need to file the original copy with the court and make at least one copy. Have the clerk stamp a copy to prove that you filed the original at the courthouse - in case the original gets lost or misfiled.

Just showing up at the courthouse is NOT enough!
