Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
sibling custody
I am trying to find out if and how to get custody of my 16 year old sister. I am 21, married and own a home. My sister already lives with me. Our mother is in jail, and our father lives in anonther state. As I stated earlier, my sister already lives with my husband and I, and now we want to get custody or guardianship of her. If we don't, our dad wants to take her to live with him, against her will. He does have a job, but no place to live. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,

Re: sibling custody
It appears you live in Harris County.
If you have had your sister live with you over 6 months then you have legal standing to ask for custody.

Obviously, you need an attorney. There are excellent family law attorneys on this website in your area (review Fran Brochstein). Most attorneys will work with you on a payment plan.
Your father has strong legal claims to conservatorship, and it is important that you have an attorney able to overcome them, by establishing that it is in your sister's best interest that she remain with you. Your mother's agreement would be helpful.
