Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

My son is 17 years old and he wants to change his last name. How old does he have to be to change it without his parents permission in the state of Texas? we have no contact with his father and are worried about needing his permission

Until he is 18, you will need to find and serve the father who may or may not object. It will be less expensive to get his consent ahead of time. If he refuses, then just wait a year.
