Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
My son is 3 years old, I have been the sole provider for him since he was born. His father ran off and got on drugs shortly before he was born. He has been in and out of jail, felonies, drug charges, revocation of parole and probation, burglary, and the list goes on and on. He has failed to pay court ordered child support, he has finally hit $22,000.00 in arrears and medical support. He is currently in jail facing prison time. Do I have grounds to terminate his parental rights? I have no criminal history, I have a good job, and in college. I pay all bills myself, and provide for my child. My son doesnt really have any emotional attachment to him. My ex rarely seeked to use his visitation rights and the few times that he did, would call me bright and early the next morning asking me if I could come get "the kid". Thanks! Kendra

If a person doesn't support his child "in accordance with his ability" for a period of one year, that's grounds for termination of parental rights.
