In the state of Texas, is there a cap on the amount of child support the noncustodial parent has to pay or is the amount directly based on how much the individual earns?

There is a cap. For one child, the cap is $1,500 per month. For two children, the cap is $1,875.

With that said, the child support statutes are "guidelines" which most court's follow. However, in the event that there is a special need that the child has that the non-custodial parent can easily afford to contribute towards, the court can order additional support over the guidelines. If it does so, it cannot order any amount over and above the actual proven needs of the child.
