Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

stepparent adoption

I live in the Houston area. My husband and I have decided it is time for him to adopt my daughter legally. My daughter is 7 years old and has never met her biological father. I was married to her bio-father and divorced when she was 4 months. My ex agreed to give her up for adoption whenever I remarried. Since this will not be contested, is there a less expensive way to go about the process? Please don't mention I can make monthly payments. I know that is an option but that's doesn't make it cheaper. Also, my ex was ordered to pay $300 a month in child support. He did so for about 4 years then stopped. He owes about $10,000 in back child support. Will he still be liable for that even after the adoption is complete?

Re: stepparent adoption

You are absolutely correct that monthly payments do not make hiring an attorney any cheaper! Attorneys offer it as a convenience for their clients.

I would estimate the cost of an adoption from $2,000 to over $5,000.

Read my post to 316181706 regarding what is involved.

A termination and step-parent adoption is a long, complicated process.

Terminating a parent's right is considered a "severe" act and the parent whose rights are being terminated is given every opportunity to prevent his rights from being terminated.

Don't be surprised if he objects to the termination.

Best of luck to you!

Re: stepparent adoption

The payment plans are to help those who want a

Lawyer but do not have the cash up front. The

adoption will consist of a home study that will

cost about 6-700$ and must be paid up front.

The father will probably still be liable for

the back child support. If the bio. father has

missed more than six child support payment

I could file a motion to have his parental

rights terminated. Then the step-father will

have the opportunity to adopt the child.
