Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Support/Maintenance in divorce

Is there a way to put things into place quickly, in order that a mother would not lose everything while waiting for support etc. to be decided? Is there separate maint. in Texas. Should a mother with 6 children (4 his) and no other income, be eligible to free legal assistance?

Free legal assistance on temporaray maintenance is hard to come by. You might get some assistance from your local bar association or women's groups for the divorce, but the other things are labor intensive and usually cost money. But, don't be afraid to ask. Doesn't cost any extra. Good Luck.

In Harris County, nothing moves quickly. The family law courts are overwhelmed.

You can always apply for free legal services but they are also overwhelmed. Some people are on a waiting list for 6 months or so -- if they even get accepted.

Texas offers a temp. order hearing where child support, visitation, and possibly spousal support will be discussed.

Often before a hearing, the parties must attend mediation.

Your friend needs to talk to an attorney that does a lot of family law.
